CGR Undertow – PAC-MAN AND THE GHOSTLY ADVENTURES review for Xbox 360

Human beings disagree on a lot of things,
but if there’s one thing we can agree on…it’s that Pac-Man looks f*cking stupid with legs. He’s like a fat yellow nightmare,
dipped in stupidity. So, you know, another 3D Pac-Man game. That’s what we need. Something to bring us
together. In utter disgust. Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventure seems to
have no idea what year it is. Seriously, it’s a design that went out of style a decade ago, it’s a character that
should’ve learned his lesson about growing legs even further back than that…and it has a camera that doesn’t seem
to realize, “Dude, we fixed cameras in 3D platformers a long time ago.” This game’s so bad and boring, I’m not even
sure what year it is. I feel like an abduction victim, who’s lost time. I don’t know where I am anymore, and I think
there’s something in my neck. So the game takes place on Pac-World, which
should give you an idea of just how much thought went into this game. You can still eat ghosts, but for some reason,
you’re friends with Inky, Blinky, Pinky and Clyde, and Pac-Man has the voice of a 10-year-old boy. Coming from me,
that says something. Pac-Man’s, like, 40 and married. Why’s he sound like he wants a skateboard
for Christmas? So there’s a villain named Betrayus. There’s
a story, but seriously? Betrayus? Pac-World? I’m seriously, just…amazed. This is the kind of stuff you read on a forum.
Like a weird fan fiction or something. Only it’s not. Somehow, this is a real Pac-Man game. And when he gets the
ice power-up, he turns into…are you ready for this?…Ice Pac. I’m gonna need an ice pack, after this crap. Anyway, objectively speaking, this is a 3D
platformer. In the simplest, earliest sense you can imagine. There are enemies and things you can collect, and Pac-Man
can power-up. He can throw fireballs, and he can turn into a green lizard with a tongue…if Mario has a legal
team, they’re probably hitting the books as we speak. This is ridiculous. In fact, the only relatively modern-feeling
thing about this game…is that the levels are kinda divided into separate little areas that Pac-Man flies to. So it’s
basically Mario Galaxy, only he flies through tubes instead of space. So…there’s that. At least it also copies something new. So how about the levels? Well, if you’ve played
any video game literally ever, you can probably guess where this is heading. City, jungle ruins, snow world…I
don’t know, whatever your favorite level cliche is, it’s probably here. So I guess there’s some comfort in that. This game
is instantly familiar in every way, so I guess it’s a perfect game for really young players. And you know, to be fair, it does play well.
The design is completely uninspired, but the game’s mechanics are at least okay. The controls are fine, the abilities
work like you’d expect…the only frustration in terms of gameplay comes from that awful camera. You’ll fall
from ledges and take damage from enemies you didn’t even see, and that sucks. But for the most part, there’s no serious
problems with the controls or mechanics. They’re perfectly functional. And perfectly boring. I mean, this is pretty clearly a kid’s game.
So I guess your view on this game depends on your expectations from kid’s games. If you think kids can’t discern an
objectively good game from an objectively poor game, you probably won’t see a problem here. It works, it’s unoffensive…but
it’s generic on a pretty stunning level. This is paint-by-numbers game design, the kind of game you seriously can
go through with a checklist…picking out all the borrowed ideas. And it’s sad. Pac-Man is an icon. But…what
do you do with Pac-Man? In this world of complex games, how do you
evolve that simple Pac-Man formula? I don’t know, but I can tell you one thing.
You don’t do this.

  1. CCR…one thing watch the show 1st epsoide to find how how pacman got the hole power ups n how he kinda befriended the ghosts  i think this is set is parallel universe to the original canon series

  2. So the person who voiced Pacman in this is the same person who voiced Gohan in Dragonball Z Kai. I guess they needed money.

  3. the Pacman World games were just as basic as this game is. People talk like that game was Mario 64 or something, as far as Im concerned this and the World games fall in the same line of real basic 3d platformers. It seems people just cannot get over the voice or the new cartoon, but me Im a hardcore Pac fan and Im happy to get anything that is decent from Pac because in case everyone forgot Pacman has never had a high budget game ever.

  4. You know, while I'd say that a while ago, the internet was unreasonably unfair to the Sonic X voice crew when they hit the main games as a comparison to my personal problem, I absolutely cannot fucking stand Pac-Man's voice here.  It makes me think that someone tried to almost go for dubbed Naruto and while I think Naruto's voice isn't THAT bad, trying to sound like it and failing makes it so much worse.

  5. this game is well..okay but the best 3d pacman game is pacman world 3 in my opinion it has great controls great gameplay and is just really fun to play i would play that is you want a good 3d platforming pacman game

  6. btw hate the fucking show it ruins pacman and why does he sound like hes 9 when hes pac man and why does he hang out with a goth miss pacman

  7. Just picked up this game a couple weeks ago and so far, I am digging it.  The reason for the voices etc, is that its based on the cartoon – PacMan and The Ghostly Adventures – Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures, also known as Pac-World (パックワールド Pakkuwārudo?), is a Japanese/Canadian/American computer-animated television series in production by 41 Entertainment, Arad Productions Inc. and Bandai Namco Games for Tokyo MX (stereo version), BS11 (stereo version) and Disney XD (bilingual version).

The series first aired on June 15, 2013 on Disney XD in the US, on March 17, 2014 on Disney XD in Canada and premiered on April 5, 2014 on Tokyo MX and BS11 in Japan, and is being produced by Avi Arad.[3] The series is rated TV-Y7. A video game based on the series was released on October 29, 2013.

  8. They could use any kind of solo videogame character and replace it with pacman. It's make the same game, except for ghosts it's probably another villain. Seriously. How f*cking generic.

  9. god fucking damnit. i clicked the xbox 360 review because i figured okay it now has a 85% chance of not being derek and its still fucking derek

  10. You're kinda an idiot aren't you? This is based off a HORRIBLE kids show, which is a relaunch of a mediocre kids show from the 80's. I remember a pacman show from back then it was still lame then. But it was marginally better than the recent one.

  11. Doesn't look too terrible at all. Graphics and animations are actually pretty damn nice. The levels look like they were ripped right from Ratchet and Clank though. Also, EXCUSE YOU SIR. PAC-MAN WITH LEGS IS FINE. Have you played Pac-Man World 2? That game is bliss.

  12. Well Derek….. Come on. I loved Pacman World 1&2. They were damn good. And this is coming from a guy who doesn't care much for Namco.

  13. I like all the references this game makes to all the old Pac-Man games via sound effects and little graphical things (like pixel art incorporated into aspects of level design).

  14. The irony of Derek talking about generic formulaic borrowed ideas is astounding.

The typical modern Derek "review" consists of
Step 1: Make a lame joke in a stupid voice that not even the youngest among us would find funny (bonus points if it is about something completely unrelated to the game being reviewed & lasts over a minute).
Step 2: State that the game is shit (or in very rare occasions that it is good).
Step 3: Explain very little about what makes the game good or bad but make sure to pepper the review with more off topic nonsense.
Step 4: Ramble like a drunken hobo even more.
Step 5: State that the game sucks (or is awesome) one last time
    Step 6: End "review"

  15. Pac man is friends with Blinky, Inky, Pinky, and Clyde like in the tv show. And In the show he is only a kid. He only about 13. It's all in the show you should check it out.

  16. What's funny is it's obvious the reviewer hates the game but looking at the gameplay this game looks awesome. I'm gonna buy it.

  17. To me the game was super easy and had this strange feeling to it the whole time not a great game but it was entertaining, the older pac man world games were so much better but died after the 3rd one imo

  18. I just hate this reboot. It just throws all of the classic characters and charm out the window and turns Pac-Man into just another bad kid's tv show. The game is even worse. Want a new Pac-Man game? Play one of the championship games that has gameplay that resembles the original games. Pac-Man World is better than this shit.

  19. pacman has had legs in promotional material almost since the beginning… I feel like you just went in ready to hate this. Looks like a perfectly fine and fun 3D platformer. World's look interesting as well, I'll probably pick this up.

  20. With out Pac-Man you don't have a job! Have respect!  Believe me this game is as good as any Mario Bros game!!!

  21. Pac Man sounds like Naruto Uzamaki from the english dub of Naruto, Naruto Shippuden, & Boruto:Naruto Next Generations. Don't believe me. Listen to those two voices back to back for 1 hour. You'll thank me.

  22. Man, I saw this cover and thought dang do what Cupheads doing and make some good platformers but damn…he doesn't look bad with legs too. If it was 2D and like a Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze style then yeh be heaps better.
